CLUBS
  1. Chess Team and Club - Steve Cadagin
    The chess team and club are for anybody who wants to have a good time. Team members compete against other schools, and then in March compete in the DVC and state tournaments. Another option is for those who just want to play for fun, or maybe even just want to learn how to play the game. The chess club is open to anybody, regardless of ability. Both the team and club meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the library from October through March. See you there!

  3. Club Environmental Rescue - Lisa Gathman, Cyd Paulsen
    Are you interested in helping to improve our environment towards clean air, water, and land? Club Environmental Rescue ( E.R.) does just that! Club E.R. helps to preserve the Earth one meeting at a time. Where else can you say you spent your time saving the world?!? Students recycle, plant trees and plants, do environmental cleanups, take fun field trips, promote environmental issues to others, and do fund raisers to support the environment. If you want to have fun and feel good about improving the environment for Mother Earth, people and animals, Club E.R. is for you!

    The Wheaton West Hockey Club is a combined High School hockey club that fields both Junior Varsity and Varsity High School level teams. Both teams play in the Illinois Suburban High School League http://www.ishl.us. The Varsity will also play in the Metro Invitational Tournament league. The teams are comprised of players from three High Schools, West Chicago Community High School, Wheaton Academy, and Wheaton North High School. Participation is open to any hockey player that attends one of the three schools. With Education as a focus, the goal of Wheaton West Hockey Club is to give High School age players from West Chicago Community High School, Wheaton Academy , and Wheaton North High School a place to continue to play competitive hockey, to represent their High Schools and their community.   5. Key Club - Debbie Tate, Jane Bredrup
    Key Club is a service group who meets weekly on Thursdays from 2:30 - 3:30. It is involved with many school and community service projects such as baking cookies for shelters, reading/tutoring children, holiday festivals and volunteering at assisted living facilities. All high school students are welcome. Join Key Club!
  6. LaCrosse (Boys) - Holly Higgins at hollyannehiggins@yahoo.com
    Lacrosse is classified as an "emerging sport" by the IHSA so as a result exists as a club for now. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the area combining the best of basketball, hockey, football and soccer. Lacrosse is a "no-cut" sport and we offer athletic letters. We play in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) and offer two levels of play this year, Frosh/Soph and Junior Varsity with Varsity to be added next year.   7. Literary Magazine - Debbie VanGetson
    Staff membership in WN's literary magazine, Déjà Vu, is open to all students with an interest in writing and artwork. Weekly meetings generally last one to two hours. The magazine is published in spring. Meetings consist of evaluating and discussing submissions for publication and planning layouts. Students need not be members to submit works.
  8. Math Team - Cindy Budzikowski, Marina Mulford
    Wheaton North Math Club has three components, offering a variety of math activities to all students. Throughout the year we sponsor a total of 18 after school league competitions open to all students. These contests are a half hour in length and do not require any outside practice. For the more serious mathlete, we also sponsor the Falcon Math Team which competes against other schools in February and March. We do practice for DVC and Regional competitions but tailor the practices around other school activities. Students who do well at Regionals are invited to the State Finals in April. Questions?   9. MOSAIC - Nancy Peterson, Sue Taddeucci
    Mosaic at Wheaton North was formed to promote tolerance and an environment free from harassment for students from all walks of life. The mission of Mosaic is to provide education, strive to eliminate stereotypes, build bridges, and create opportunities to foster new relationships. (Mosaic meets about 1 hour/week on a volunteer basis)
  10. Mu Alpha Theta (National Math Honor Society) - Marina Mulford
    The third component of math team is Mu Alpha Theta (National Math Honor Society). To be eligible, students must be of at least soph status, have completed at least 5 semesters of college prep math. The student must have a math gpa of at least 4.8 with no grade lower than a B in the most recent 5 semesters of college prep math. Enthusiasm for mathematics in and/or out of the classroom will be regarded as a plus. Questions? See Ms. Mulford in room 806.
  11. Newspaper (Falcon Flyer) - Ron Piro
    If you like to see your name in print, join the school newspaper. The Falcon Flyer covers all aspects of WN, including sports, news, clubs, and other events. The feature sections include movie and CD reviews, and senior spotlights. Everybody is welcome to help out. Think about taking journalism too!
  12. Pep Club - Jackie Morgan
    Pep Club was formed in 1995 with a goal to increase school spirit. Some activities that Pep Club participates in are making signs for the front hall, sports events, and any other school events. Pep Club is looking forward to increased membership and even more school spirit in the years to come. Pep Club meets weekly for two hours.
  13. Scholastic Bowl - Phyllis Kidd, Karen Saad
    This organization competes with other schools in scholastic areas. It is a DVC activity and it is part of the IHSA regular program with state playoffs. It is team "Jeopardy" style, where students work short answer questions and group bonus questions together. Practices are announced, so come and see how much you know.
  14. Snowball - Jack Schomig
    Operation Snowball Leadership Retreat is a weekend program for high school students that focuses on building leadership skills while promoting healthy decision making. Activities are designed so that teens learn more about themselves and the world around them. Information is presented in large group presentations and workshops. You make friends while having fun. The high school also participates as a leader in the Snowflake (middle school) and Snow flurry (elementary school) programs.
  15. Spring Extrav - Lorie Martinez
    Spring Extravaganza is a fundraiser for Student Council. After days of audtions the best talents are chosen to perform over two evenings. Various acts include singing, dancing, bands, and much more.
  16. Student Ambassadors - Kevin Williams
    The WN Ambassador is an elite group of students that have a 4.00 or higher, that have been teacher nominated, that display the characters (friendly, out-going, etc..) of a top student along with displaying WN in the best possible light.
    They also must commit to 10 hours of service a semester. Falcon Ambassadors are nominated by the faculty each spring. They volunteer throughout the year to represent Wheaton North at various events helping with building tours, welcoming guests, ushering and much more.
  17. Student Council - Palak Patel, Lorie Martinez
    Student Council runs most of the student events at Wheaton North, from dances, to blood drives, to other charitable efforts. Students are encouraged to participate as representatives, or as elected officers of their classes. Student Council also works with faculty and administration to improve campus life. It is a very important activity in improving student life and connecting students with school, and all are invited to participate. Part of Student Council is Class Council where you will meet with people from your own class.
  18. True North Stars (SODA) - Jack Schomig
    True North Stars promotes prevention through activity. We are involved in projects such as Red Ribbon Week, Safe Homecoming, Turnabout, Alcohol Awareness, and Safe Holiday activities. We promote a healthy, responsible and legal lifestyle. We want everyone to be involved and will work to make any student based activity a reality. We have sponsored dances, caroling, wall climbing, canoe trips and many have other activities. We are meeting on Tuesdays from 2:25 - 3:00 in room 602. Everyone is always welcome.
  19. Yearbook - Kevin Williams, Vi Gingerich, and Sandy Verdon
    The Northerner is the WNHS yearbook. Staff picks certain sections to work on. The club needs students interested in sports, academics, performing arts and class sections; it also needs photographers, artists, and those with computer skills. The Northerner welcomes all interested students to participate.
  20. Senior Pictures: If you missed senior pictures this summer or need retakes, you can go to the HRImaging/Root studios to get your pictures taken. The Naperville studio (630-416-0552) and the Schaumburg studio (847-706-9688) are the closest. Call for an appointment. You will then look at the proofs and select the pose (on-line) you want for the yearbook. You must do this by December 12 if you want to be included in this year's Senior Section of The Northerner. Remember, you do not need to purchase any packages, but for consistency's sake, only the HRImaging/Root picture can be included in the yearbook.
  21. Underclass Pictures: Yearbook pictures will be taken September 8 through 12 through PE, Health, or Driver's Ed classes. If a student does not have one of these classes this semester, he/she should see Mr. Williams in the Activities Office. Order forms (for those who wish to order a package) will be mailed home the week before. If you don't get one, extra forms are available in the front office or the Activities Office. Teachers will tell their classes the week before which day their class will be getting their pictures taken. Also, schedules will be posted throughout the school the week before. If you order a package, you must bring the filled out order form and money to turn in as you get your picture taken; you cannot turn the money in later. If you missed the picture week or want retakes, mop up day is Thursday, November 6. You can show up in the LLC between 7:00 and 2:30 to get your picture taken. Bring your bad picture package to turn in if you're getting retakes. No appointment is necessary.
MUSIC
  1. Colorguard - Jon Noworyta
    Students with strong dance background encouraged to join. This group performs and practices with the Marching Band during the fall season and as a competitive unit during the basketball season.
  2. Jazz Bands 1 & 2 - Jon Noworyta
    These groups focus on performing jazz music and rehearse several times a week outside the school day, beginning in later October or early November. Members of Jazz I are selected by audition or Director recommendation only. Jazz II is open to all interested students. Both groups perform actively through out the region. Extracurricular, no credit.
  3. Marching Band - Jon Noworyta
    The Marching Falcons is a musical and athletic activity open to any student with musical experience. The group is very active from August through October, rehearsing outside the school day on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, performing at all home football games, several regional competitions, and festivals. While there are no auditions for woodwind and brass players, there are try-outs for the drumline. Extracurricular, no credit.
  4. Pep Band - Jon Noworyta
    This group of students performs at all home basketball games to entertain and excite the home fans. Our motto, Have fun - PLAY LOUD!
  5. Show Choir Band - Jon Noworyta
    A small group of instrumentalists selected by audition who accompany the Show Choir in performance. Extracurricular, no credit. Time commitment: same as show choir (starting a half an hour before)
  6. Show Choir Orchestra - Amy Nooden
    A small group of instrumentalists selected by audition who accompany the Show Choir in performance.
  7. Pit Orchestra - Krista Halvorson
    This is a group of students chosen from an audition that accompany the musicals.
  8. Show Choir - Amy Nooden
    Show Choir is an auditioned extracurricular ensemble that meets outside of regular school hours. No credit is earned for participation. Students must be enrolled in a curricular chorus at the same time. This group performs at four major concerts each year, plus multiple public performances. This is not a competitive show choir.
HONORS and AWARDS
  1. National Honor Society - Angela Raso
    NHS is an organization whose purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character. Juniors and seniors whose cumulative GPA is a 4.7 or above may file a petition for membership after first semester grades are posted. A faculty committee reviews the petitions and makes the decision concerning membership. Meetings are held once a month on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:50 A.M.

  4. French Honor Society - Eric Laird, Amy Mores
    Société Honoraire de Français, the Wheaton North French Honor Society, is a national organization that recognizes outstanding scholarships in the study of French language. After semester grades, student in third, fourth and fifth year classes are invited to apply for membership. This honor group sponsors various activities focusing on French language and culture. A special induction is held in the spring.
  5. German Honor Society - Jeanne Poe
    Delta Epsilon Phi, the German Honor Society, is a national education fraternity. Its purpose is to recognize scholarship in the study of German and promote interest in the language and culture of the German-speaking countries. Students who have completed at least 3 semesters of German with an A-average (or better) are eligible for induction in the spring. Annual events include Wheaton North's Oktoberfest, and the Fasching/Karneval celebration in late winter. Its major fund-raiser is the selling of " Countdown to Christmas" chocolate calendars. Meetings usually take place before school, depending on the schedules of members and officers.
  6. Spanish Honor Society - Shari Parkash, Liz Karras
    La Sociedad Honoria Hispanica, Capitulo Kukulcan of Wheaton North was organization in 1976. This national organization recognizes high achievement in Spanish by high school students and promotes an interest in Hispanic studies. The American association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese coordinates all chapters in the United States. To qualify for membership in this society a student must maintain a 4.6 GPA in all Spanish classes. Students are eligible to join after the first semester of their third year of Spanish.
PERFORMING ARTS
  1. Dramas and Musicals - Elizabeth Schmitz
    Open to all Wheaton North students, many by audition only, these shows involve a large number of participants. Typically there are three to four shows presented each school year. This is totally extracurricular and requires a great deal of time, particularly if the student has a lead part.
  2. Speech Team - Stan Austin, Scott Coleman, Ed Klemm
    Speech Team is an extracurricular activity open to Wheaton North students of all grade levels. Students may participate in any of the 13 different events ranging from acting to public speaking and dramatic to humorous. Novice (1 st year) participation is open to any student, while Varsity participation is by audition and selection. Wheaton North competes at tournaments around the area and the entire state. Team meetings are held every Monday after school from the middle of October through the end of the season.
  3. Technology Club (Stage Crew) - Robert Griegoliet
    This organization is open to all students who wish to work "behind the scenes" on any production. Areas of concentration include lights, sound, scene construction and painting, costumes and make-up. There is a Technical Theatre class that is offered for credit.
DANCE
  1. Falconettes Dance Team - Melissa Pierceall
    This group of girls is selected by audition each year. They perform highly disciplined dance routines at home football games, basketball games, pep assemblies and numerous other activities. It is extracurricular and there is no class credit. They practice approx. 20 hours per week, 10 months a year. They also participate in competitions throughout the state.
  2. Steppers Club - Jackie Morgan
    This is a group of students that perform dance routines. There is no try-out. This is extracurricular and there is no class credit. They practice approx. 4 hours per week.
