Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I am proud to announce that Wheaton North High School has once again been named a silver medalist school by U.S. News and World Report ranking of America's Best High Schools. Of the 742 high schools in Illinois that were ranked (18,743 nationwide), we were among the top 5% (top 3% nationally). In DuPage county, we were one among seven high schools selected as silver winners. As I often say, Wheaton North High School is a special place because of all those who are involved. I continue to be proud to serve as its principal.
It's hard to believe that it is second semester already. Included in this newsletter are details about many upcoming events. Please be sure to read the enclosed articles for important information highlighted by Parent Curriculum Night - February 3 and Turnabout - February 13. Additionally, this year’s musical, “The Music Man” held on March 11 - 13 will showcase many talented students. The public is always welcome. Our music department will continue to showcase students performing throughout March including the Orchestra Concert on March 18, Choir Concert on March 23, and Band Concert on March 25.
Wheaton North High School is a great school. The faculty and staff are dedicated to serving our students by offering them challenging curriculum in preparation of their future. Of course, everything we do at Wheaton North is in partnership with our parent community, and I have a request of junior parents. Although we are proud of our silver medal status, we need to do better on the Prairie State Achievement Exam. Each year the state of Illinois raises the adequate yearly progress percentage. Therefore we continually need our students to do their very best on both Day 1 and Day 2 of the PSAE. Day 1 is the ACT and students take that seriously. However, Day 2 is equally important to the students' PSAE status as well as the overall performance of Wheaton North High School. Since we are evaluated by the state of Illinois based on the PSAE scores, I would appreciate it if parents would hold discussions with your juniors about doing the best they can. This year the PSAE is on April 28 - 29. Sophomores and Freshmen take the PLAN and the Explore respectively during that time. Seniors will have the opportunity to Job Shadow during testing days. Please see the enclosed articles for details.
My second request of all parents is regarding dancing. With the upcoming Turnabout, I would like to remind parents to hold discussions with your teenagers attending dances at Wheaton North about appropriate dancing behavior. The dance guidelines are reviewed by Mr. Venckus in this newsletter as well as with the student body. Each dance we have had to remove several students who do not comply. Although, dancing behavior has improved, we would still like parents to share your expectations with your teenagers as well. Wheaton North students have always lived up to our expectations. I am confident that with your help, students can still have a good time at dances. I appreciate your help.
Finally, the Falcon Boosters will host the annual dinner auction "Falcon Spring Breakaway" on Saturday, March 6 at Arrowhead. This is their major fundraiser with all of the proceeds directly benefiting the students of Wheaton North. Please come out and show your support. It is a wonderful community event! I look forward to seeing you there.
As always, please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Good communication is critical to our success.
Sincerely,
Jill Bullo, principal
I hope your students had a relaxing winter break and are off to a good start this semester. I enjoyed meeting the new incoming freshman parents at our 8th Grade Parent Orientation. Thank you for completing the survey, your input is appreciated. We are looking forward to having the class of 2014 join Wheaton North!
Reminder: Our 2nd Semester Curriculum Night will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010. The evening will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. with your students 1st period class. (Please have your student complete their schedule on the enclosed flyer)
It is hard to believe we are beginning the 3rd week of second semester. Progress reports will be sent home with your student on March 12. There are many exciting activities taking place at Wheaton North in February and March. I encourage you to look through the newsletter for the specific dates and times. As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at 784-7303.

Orchestra Notes
Dear Wheaton North Orchestra Students, Families, and Fans,
The next two months promise to be an exciting and busy time for our orchestras. This month we will be representing Wheaton North High School at the annual University of Illinois High School String and Orchestra Festival on February 27th. This will be our most significant trip of the year. Our tour of central Illinois will include a stop at Illinois State University on February 26th where we will participate in coaching sessions and clinics with ISU faculty. We are excited for both of these exciting opportunities!
In addition, we are currently in full swing with preparations for the Spring Musical, The Music Man. Members of the orchestra and band will accompany the wonderful cast and theatre production staff to present this classic show for the community on March 11-13.
Finally, the highest honor for any individual musician at Wheaton North is to be selected to perform on the annual Concerto-Aria Concert with the orchestra. This year we have four fabulous winners of the competition. They will all perform, accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra, in concert on March 18th. The concert will feature Adam Billingham (marimba), Josh Billingham (piano), Bridgette Ecklund (soprano), and Devyn Manschot (double bass). This concert represents some of the brightest talents in our school, and promises to be a “must-see” event for the entire community.
Thank you for your support of the Wheaton North Orchestra program!
With anticipation of musical days to come,

Dear Parents/Guardians:
Please read the following information regarding the PSAE, PLAN and EXPLORE test.
PSAE ( Prairie State Achievement Examination)
The PSAE is required by the Illinois State Board of Education and Community Unit School District 200 Board of Education and must be taken by qualifying juniors (more than 12 credits after 5 semesters) in order to receive a high school diploma. This test is comprised of the ACT (Day 1) and Work Keys (Day 2) and is used by the state of Illinois to assess if a school is “meeting” or “not meeting” state standards. Students that are not sure of their credit status can verify if they are taking the PSAE by checking with their guidance counselor. The PSAE measures the performance of junior students on the Illinois Learning Standards for reading, mathematics, science and writing. The PSAE is given on April 28th and April 29th.
PLAN
All sophomore students take the PLAN. The PLAN is a test preparation activity that can positively impact students’ scores on the ACT Assessment. The ACT Assessment is part of the PSAE given to qualifying junior students. The PLAN measures the performance of sophomores in english, math, reading and science. The PLAN is given on April 28th only.
EXPLORE
All freshman students take the EXPLORE. The EXPLORE is designed to help 9th graders explore a broad range of content areas. It prepares students not only for their high school coursework but for the PLAN and PSAE as well. The EXPLORE measures the performance of freshman in english, math, reading and science. The EXPLORE is given on April 29th only.
Seniors
Juniors (more than 12 credits)
Sophomores
Freshman
Homeroom
All students will participate in a homeroom on April 14th and 21st. On those days we will follow the “60 Minute Assembly” schedule. The purpose of the homeroom is to allow freshman, sophomore and junior students to become familiar with the room they will be testing, the teacher(s) who will administer their test and to be informed about the test structure and its content. Senior students will use the period as a study hall.
Please encourage your student(s) to do their best on these respective tests. If you have any questions, please call me at 784-7302 or email me at mbiscan@cusd200.org. Thank you for your assistance in this important process.
Sincerely
Matt Biscan

SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION REGISTRATION:
Students may sign-up for Driver Education this summer on April 5th – April 9th in the Guidance Office. The $250 Drivers Education fee will need to be paid at the time of registration. There will again be two sessions offered to the students during the summer. Each session is four weeks in length. Session one begins in June and session two will begin in July.
There will be a Driver Education Parent/Student meeting on Monday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. This meeting is mandatory for the student and at least one parent/guardian. The students will take the Rules of the Road test on Thursday, May 27th at 2:20 pm in the cafeteria. They must pass the test in order to receive their Learners Permit. Students can go to our website, wnhs.org (Driver Education), in order to start reviewing for the written test (Rules of Road).
DID YOU KNOW?
On January 1st, 2010 two new laws went into effect in order to strengthen Illinois laws on distracted driving. The new laws “ban” text messaging while driving, and using a cell phone when in a school or construction zones.
The penalty for violating either of these measures results in a moving violation that will go on the motorist’s driving record as well as accompanying fines and court costs to be determined by the judge.
You can log onto the Secretary of States web site if you have any further question about the new laws regarding teenage drivers at www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

February is Dental Health Month
Has your child seen a dentist for their routine dental care? Dental health is vital to overall health. The DuPage county Health Department SMILE SQUAD will be coming to Wheaton North March 18th and 19th to provide important oral health services to students. A parent permission form must be completed and returned to the nurse’s office by March 12th if you would like your student to participate in this wonderful program. Permission forms are available in the main office or the nurse’s office.
The Health Dept. will screen anyone with a completed permission form but only do cleaning, sealants and/or fluoride to those who meet the financial qualifications. If dental disease is found the student is referred to a dental health care provider – there may be a charge to get needed work completed.
Other community resources are:
Call 942-3250
- DuPage County Health Dept.(DCHD) dental services – 690-7450
- College of DuPage Dental Hygiene School offers preventative care in a great facility with reasonable fees but do NOT see children under 5 years old-
People’s Resource Center Dental Clinic – 690-7450 For families with Medicaid or Public Aid #’s or All Kids – call Doral Dental at (888)286-2447.
Health Insurance
All Kids Hotline 1-866-ALL-KIDS (1-866-255-5437) TTY: 1-877-204-1012
All Kids is the Illinois program for comprehensive health insurance for children and is available to every uninsured child at rates their parents can afford. The All Kids program offers Illinois’ uninsured children comprehensive health care that includes doctor’s visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care and medical devices like eyeglasses and asthma inhalers. Parents pay monthly premiums for the coverage, but rates for middle-income families are significantly lower than they are on the private market. You can get information and an application at www.allkids.com.
Emergency Contacts
In an effort to best serve your student, please notify the health office (784-7327) if emergency phone numbers have changed since registration. We also appreciate notification if your student has experienced any significant health or medication changes.
Wheaton North Culinary Arts classes were selected this year to receive a $100 grant from the DuPage County Farm Bureau. The Illinois Beef Industry, in cooperation with the Women’s Committee, makes this award to promote the use of beef in our curriculum.
This generous donation is being used by two courses. Food Science will compare fat content, texture, and taste of different types of ground beef, and Culinary Arts II prepares dishes which use braising methods to tenderize beef. We have sixty students in these two classes this year.
We hope you had a safe and restful winter break. Second semester is in full swing, and we would like to bring a few items to your attention.
New Tardy Initiative
Our new tardy initiative has decreased tardies to school and classes this year. Two of the many benefits of students being on time are 1) teachers are able to begin class uninterrupted when the bell rings, and 2) there are fewer behavior issues in the hallways during passing periods. Students’ tardies have been re-set to zero for second semester.
Dance Guidelines
With Turnabout and Prom approaching, we would like to remind everyone of our dance guidelines. Students have been informed of the guidelines through student meetings at the beginning of the year and various announcements throughout the year. The policy is also printed on the back of each ticket and appears on Page 13 of the student handbook. It states the following:
Students need to demonstrate appropriate behavior and show respect for themselves, staff, and peers at all times. This includes showing respect for others relative to space and refraining from provocative and inappropriate dancing. Students who do not abide by these standards may be asked to leave the dance without warning and will receive consequences according to the current school regulations.
Our goal is to provide an environment that is appropriate, comfortable, and enjoyable for all students at Wheaton North. We appreciate your help in addressing this issue.
Thank you for your attention to these items. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Financial Aid Workshop at COD
The College of DuPage will be hosting this important workshop on Thursday, February 18th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at its Glen Ellyn Campus in SRC 2800. The workshop is free and open to the public. Parents of all grade levels are encouraged to attend, but it is especially useful for senior parents. For more information go to http://home.cod.edu/financialAid/datesEvents.aspx
The topics for the workshop’s sessions are as follows:
Scholarship Bulletin
As mentioned in the December newsletter the Guidance Department provides students and parents with a list of local scholarships and some national scholarships through the Scholarship Bulletin. During February and March we receive many scholarship offers, so the bulletin is updated more frequently. Therefore, we encourage you and your student to continually check for the updated versions. The Scholarship Bulletin is available in the College and Career Center. It is also available online at www.prephq.com (students need to know their log-in and password) or at www.wnhs.org →Counseling→Guidance Department→College/Career Resources.
Local Scholarship Application
The Local Scholarship Application is now available in the College and Career Center. This is a great opportunity for students to apply for a number of scholarships by filling out one application. This year we are anticipating nine scholarships on the application that are generously endowed by local community organizations. Awards normally range from $350 to $1500. The deadline for the application is Thursday, February 25, 2010.
AP Test Registration
AP Test registration packets will be available in mid-February. Students can pick up a packet from their AP teacher or from the College and Career Center. Price per test is $86. The registration deadline is March 12, 2010. All packets should be turned in complete with payment and parent permission to Mary Bischoff in the College and Career Center. If you have any questions regarding AP testing please contact the Guidance Office at 784-7325.
Summer Opportunities
Students who are seeking enrichment programs for the summer are encouraged to check the Summer Program File periodically over the next few months. The file is located in the College and Career Center and will have information on summer programs offered by colleges and universities, not-for-profit groups (i.e. volunteer opportunities), and government agencies.
Course Selection Process Underway for the 2010-2011 School Year
Beginning last month and continuing through February Wheaton North counselors are assisting students with the course selection process for next year. Graduation requirements, college admission requirements, current career interests, etc. are reviewed to help students choose the correct courses for them. Parents play a vital role in this process and should discuss and review their student’s recommendations and course selections before signing off on final selections. If you have any questions about particular courses or the process please call the Guidance Office at 630-784-7325 to be connected to your student’s counselor.

Boys Track and Field
The Track and Field season has started! Come be part of the defending DVC & Sectional championship team (especially if you are coming off a winter sport). We were 9th at State last year with 7 All State Athletes! We encourage all young men to join our squad. By running track and field, you will get stronger and faster! We especially encourage athletes from other sports (football, soccer, basketball…) to join us because being faster and stronger is the key to ALL sports!
There are 18 different events to compete in. These include: Sprints, Hurdles, Distances, Jumps (long, triple, high), Shot Put and Discus, and the Pole Vault. There is a spot for everyone! We strive to have the athlete look at their own performances and see if they get a P.R. (Personal Record). We look at P.R.’s over wins every time! EVERY individual that stays in our program gets better!
To join, simply pay your athletic fee ($100.00) in the Athletic Directors office, make sure you have a current physical and parent permission form signed. Practices are every day at 2:30 p.m. and end around 5:00 p.m. (we lift every day). We have meets at least once a week. There are no BENCH WARMERS! Everyone gets to compete in the meets! We usually have around 120 athletes out for the team.
Any questions see Mr. Helberg, Mr. Graf, Mr. Potter, or Mr. McQuaid. To join, meet Coach Helberg in the Fieldhouse after school.
See you there.
Boys Tennis Meeting Wed., February 17th
Are you interested in playing or learning a new sport? Tennis, which is unique in that it can be both an individual (singles) and a team (doubles) activity, is a sport that one can play for life. The boys tennis program needs players for the upcoming season. We have both a varsity and a freshman/sophomore team. No playing experience is necessary and we always keep as many players as possible on each team.
A preseason meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 17th at
2:20 p.m. in room 408. Tryouts are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 1st. If any questions please contact Coach Rateike at 630-464-5857 or see Coach Laird in room 408.
